RoadBase helps (local) governments, companies & citizens to (re)use data on road markings and traffic signs. Based on crowdsourcing, new road safety applications can be build.

The project

RoadBase is a project created in a collaboration between Open Summer of Code and Agentschap Binnenlands Bestuur, Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer and Departement Mobiliteit en Openbare Werken Vlaanderen. The aim of this project is to create a tool to gather and integrate up to date information from different sources regarding road signs and road marks so that citizens, road managers and policy makers can effectively contribute to make their communities safer. Through linked open data, this tool is expected to provide convenience to road users and encourage them to actively engage in providing information to enhance road safety.

Deliverables

Mobile application prototype

Based on the strategic research, a mobile application was designed that allows the population to report road issues to the authorities. As a reward, participants receive badges and access to accident statistics.

Persona

Based on the target groups, interviews and survey, we developed three persona. These persona give an overview of the main parties involved in the application and what these people’s pains, gains and typical profiles are. On top of that, we created user stories that represent how these three persona would use the application we designed.

RoadBase Prototype

The RoadBase prototype enables policymakers to view, design and edit road signs and road markings on a live map. They can also see which road signs or road markings have problems, so they can quickly fix it.

RoadBase Proof-Of-Concept

A Proof-Of-Concept that allows viewing the location of the signs on a map and adding a new sign. This Proof-Of-Concept is also automatically deployed onto a server that is accessible on RedPencil Servers.
